This guide adapts Xiao Wei's 2022 beginner workflow for Meta (Facebook and Instagram) app ads. It covers business assets, AppsFlyer attribution, campaign setup, creative tests, and early performance review. Labels such as “3A/AEO,” screenshots, and numerical tips in the original reflect that period; use the options currently available in your account.
1. Prepare assets and measurement
- Confirm that the business portfolio, ad account, Facebook Page, and app have the right ownership and permissions. If the app is missing in Ads Manager, check its Meta developer status and asset authorization first.
- Make sure the app is downloadable in the target markets and its store listing and creative comply with policy.
- Define whether success means installs, registrations, purchases, or revenue, and agree on CPI, CPA, and ROAS calculations.
For the account and Page basics, see our Facebook account guide. Related assets are listed in our product catalog.
2. Connect AppsFlyer and map app events
If you use AppsFlyer, confirm the Meta developer app is ready, add the correct Facebook App ID, and activate the Meta ads partner integration. Android apps that need granular Meta Install Referrer attribution may also need the referrer decryption key. The original article's “RDK” is not a universal field required for every app.
Map in-app events, set postback scope and attribution lookback windows, then verify test installs and events. If Meta and AppsFlyer numbers differ, compare windows, time zones, event mapping, deduplication, and privacy-related limits. The original preferred “this partner only,” but postback scope depends on your measurement and privacy choices. Check AppsFlyer's Meta ads integration guide and event mapping guide.
3. Create a Meta app campaign
- Choose an objective suitable for app promotion and select the correct app, store, and ad account.
- Select an optimization event for your stage. You can test installs first; once registration or purchase reporting is stable, assess a deeper event. The old “3A/AEO” labels describe concepts, not necessarily current menu options.
- Set locations, audience, budget, bid strategy, and attribution settings. Base your test budget on target CPI or CPA, test duration, and acceptable risk.
- Choose placements. The original routinely excluded Audience Network, but this is not a universal best practice. Compare downstream user quality before limiting delivery. Meta describes Advantage+ and manual placements.
- Select the Facebook Page and eligible Instagram identity, add creative and CTA, and review previews, links, event tracking, and policy status before launch.
4. Structure creative tests
The original used one campaign, one ad set, and three ads, or a small number of ad sets. That is a manageable starting point, not a platform requirement. Give each ad set a clear hypothesis such as market or optimization event. Let ads test distinct benefits, visuals, or opening seconds. Too many near-identical ad sets can split budget and event volume.
Start with a few strong assets if inventory is limited; test dynamic or automated creative combinations when you have more useful variations. Prepare suitable aspect ratios and safe zones for Reels, Stories, and feeds. Evaluate CTR and install rate alongside CPI, registration rate, purchase CPA, and ROAS. Cheap clicks alone do not prove customer value.
5. Review results after launch
- Verify SDK setup, App ID, event mapping, permissions, and continuing event delivery.
- Track spend, impressions, clicks, installs, registrations, purchases, and revenue, with attribution windows and time zones noted.
- Compare markets, operating systems, placements, creative, and optimization events using post-install quality. Make changes after enough data has accumulated.
The original claimed that users who do not follow a Page can see only one ad every 12 hours, and suggested bidding at 85% of Facebook's automatic bid on other channels. Neither should be treated as a universal current rule. Use account reporting and controlled tests to judge frequency and bids; do not rotate Pages to evade platform limits.
FAQ
Can I run Meta app ads without AppsFlyer?
Yes, if you have another supported app-event measurement setup. The essentials are app permissions, reliable event delivery, and an available optimization goal.
Should I optimize for installs or in-app events?
Choose based on the business outcome and event volume. Installs help acquire new users; registrations and purchases are closer to value but require reliable data. Review retention and revenue in either case.
Should I always turn off Audience Network?
No. Check creative fit and downstream quality, then use a comparable test to decide whether to restrict placements.
